Description:
WS2815 LED strip is an evolutional version of WS2813 LED strip and WS2812 LED strip.
It’s 12v compared with WS2813 strip, it’s 12v with signal break-point continuous transmission feature compared to WS2812 strip.
Signal break-point continuous transmission means any pixel’s failure won’t affect signal transfer and total emitting effect.
The control circuit is embedded into the 5050 LED, which makes it has good color consistency reliability and high cost-effective.
The built-in IC is invisible from outside, this makes the strips more robust and more flexible to be applied on different types of surfaces.
As the individually addressable pixel, each LED is cuttable.
WS2815 is an intelligent circuit which integrates both the control circuit and RGB chip into single 5050 LED, to form an external control pixel.
The control circuit and the LED share the sole power source.
The chip uses dual-signal wires, so it has the feature of signal break-point continuous transmission.
It uses the built-in signal reshaping circuit to achieve the signal waveform shaping, and no distortion of waveform of signal takes place.
The working voltage is 12V, this can effectively reduce the operating current of the pixel LED, and decrease the voltage-drop of the PCB, this is to advance the consistency of the mixed lights for long-distance transmission.
WS2815 LED is now more and more used in guardrail tubes, pixel displays, flexible / rigid strips, modular lighting applications, stage lighting and innovation electronic gadgets.

1. What is WS2815 LED Strip?
A WS2815 LED strip is typically built upon a 5050 component with an integrated control circuit and RGB chip.
Features offered by it include signal reshaping drive circuit and wireless port data latch.
The 12 V WS2815 LED strip is an upgraded version of the popular 5V WS2812B/WS2813 LED strip and comprises of individually addressable LED.
WS2815 LED strips use dual signal cables, which maintain signal transmission even during a pixel failure.
It is a typical 3-channel adjustable strip with an integrated chip controlled by LED controllers.
A single LED operates as an individually addressable pixel signal break-point continuous transmission, which implies that when one LED burns out the other LEDs keep working.

2. How Does WS2815 LED Strips Work?
WS2815 LED strips use a single NZR communication mode protocol for data transfer.
Once the pixel power-on is reset, the controller sends data to the DIN port and the initial 24bit data is collected by the first pixel.
Now, the internal data latch receives this data and other data produced by the internal signal reshaping amplification circuit is transmitted to the cascade pixel via the DO port.
This is the signal for decreasing the 24bit for each pixel transmitted.
Since the pixel adopts the technology for auto-reshaping transmission, it implies that pixel cascade numbers are not restricted by the signal transmission and instead depend on the signal transmission speed.

3. What’s The Difference Between WS2812, WS2813 And WS2815 LED Strips?
All the three strips are different in several ways in their build as well as the features they offer.
Let us look at them individually and understand the differences:
WS2812 LED Strip – Also known as WS2812b, this version of the LED strip uses an embedded chip instead of an external IC and comprise of individually addressable LEDs that use DC5V.
However, in comparison to its predecessors, the WS2812 LED strips can accommodate more LEDs on a single meter strip.
Hence, you can get multiple variants of this strip comprising of 30 LEDs, 60 LEDs, and 144 LEDs per meter of a powered strip.
We can even custom-produce 72 LEDs per meter of a strip if you intend to include more LEDs on a single meter strip.
These LED strips have 4 legs but different parameter is also available.
WS2812 has 3 wire yields, namely information, anode, and no clock ways.
Even if one of the LEDs in the strip stops working, the entire strip stops functioning.
WS2813 LED Strip – It uses a DC5V to power the LEDs fitted on a component with embedded IC and is considered to be an evolved version of IC WS2812.
It has the capability of bypassing LED between two LED strips and since it’s a variant of the dual-signal wires, WS2813 naturally offers continuous signal break-point transmission.
Thus, even if one LED in the strip fails, it doesn’t affect the transmission of others within the circuit and the other LEDs keep working normally.
WS2815 LED Strips –DC12V is used to power the WS2815 LED strip and it can accommodate 30, 60, and 144 LED lines per meter of the strip.
A high voltage renders it a higher tolerance level and as it also offers continuous signal break-point transmission, so all the other LEDs keep working even when one in the strip fails.

12. How To Wire WS2815 LED Strips To A Raspberry Pi 4?
You’ll need the following components for connecting WS2815LED strips to a Raspberry Pi 4:
- Breadboard
- Jumper Wires – Male to female for connecting to Raspberry Pi and male to male for connecting the other components
- Power supply with sufficient amps – 12VDC with 4A
- Power Jack
- Level Shifter for converting 3.3V of Raspberry Pi to the Strip’s 12VDC
- WS2815 library installed on the Raspberry Pi
You must start by connecting the level shifter, so insert it at the breadboard’s center; however, you must ensure that it points towards the left.
Next, connect the breadboard’s ground bus to the first pin on the level shifter’s bottom left and the first pin on the level shifter’s bottom right.
Now connect the breadboard’s voltage bus with the pin on the level shifter’s upper left.
Now, it’s time to connect your WS2815 LED strip. Connect the ground pin on your LED strip to the ground bus on the breadboard.
Next, connect the LED strip’s data pin to the 3rd pin on the level shifter’s

13. How To Use WS2815 LED Strip With Raspberry Pi?
WS2815 LED strips can be used with a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ and use a 5.1V 2A PSU for the Raspberry adapter and 12V 20A for the LEDs.
WS2815 LED strip comprise of individually addressable LEDs i.e. they’re easily programmable with Raspberry Pi, Adafruit, FastLED library, and Arduino.
The 12V connection is considered to be a stable condition.
Besides the standard ground pin, WS2815 color also includes one Raspberry Pi GPIO pin.
You can use:
GPIO22 for the Green Color
GPO24 for the Blue Color
GPIO17 for the Red Color
You need a power jack to connect safely to the power supply and avoid crossing the wires as the WS2815 LED strip is capable of consuming a few amperes.
Additionally, you must also use separate power supplies for the WS2815 LED strip and Raspberry Pi. Attach one wire to the ground and the other to the power connection.
The connection of the ground wire is done with the breadboard ground bus, which already has an analogous voltage cable connected to it so that you can insert the power jack for establishing the power supply.
Use the PiGPIO program for testing the WS2815 LED strip.
Color brightness for the LEDs ranges between 0 (off) and 255 (full brightness).
Once all the colors are set then it’s confirmed that you’ve been able to successfully link the Raspberry Pi with WS2815 LED strip.
Raspberry Pi WS2815
14. How To Use WS2815 LED Strip With Adafruit?
WS2815 LED strip includes the latest drivers, which make it compatible with Adafruit.
Similar to the other LED strips, you can cut the strip after each LED and since the soldering pad is large enough, it’s easier to identify the cut signs and reconnect.
Connections on the strip include clearly labeled +12V BI, DI, and GND.
The BI and DI are both data signals but you can make changes with the use of DI cable.
First, you need to switch on the power supply, and then after the voltage stabilizes, you must start with linking the pixels, starting with the GND.
At full brightness, each LED on a WS2815 strip draws a maximum of 60 milliamps.
However, on a pragmatic note, it’s not possible to switch all the pixels in this manner.
Adafruit offers power supplies of 10 Amps 5V DC and if you’re using a long wire, you must be ready to tackle greater resistance.
Higher resistance results in higher voltage distributed along the length of the wire, so a voltage drop will affect the light.
You can always start with a 4-meter WS2815 LED strip and connect a 5V at one end of the line so it just moves quickly to the nearest pixel.
However, the electricity has to cover 8 meters; 4 meters on the ground side and 4 meters on the +5V grid.
The lowering of voltage results in a tinted brown effect in the last pixel.

15. How To Use WS2815 Strip LED With Arduino?
Connecting the Arduino microcontroller with the WS2815 LED strip is easy as it is accomplished in some simple steps.
Just identify the following: End of the LED Strip and the Pixel(s) to serve as the data.
WS2815 LED strip already has a “DIN” or “DI” mark printed on it.
The data input needs to be connected with the Arduino Digital pin, which is set at 6 by default.
The WS2815 LED strip comes with a shield.
Before putting the shield on the Arduino, it’s better to wear your glasses – the 40 RGB LEDs can hurt your eyes when fully powered.
Since all the LEDs are individually addressable, so you can cut the strip as per your requirement.
The 5V power supply from Adruino can help you get started with the Ws2815 operations but you must refrain from lighting up all the white pixels.
If you intend to use an external power supply for the shield, connect it to the wire on the 4-6V external power supply, which is included within the terminal block.
Both the shield as well as the Adruino can be powered with this external power supply.
Holding the Arduino to the USB or DC, you can cut the solder jumper in the middle starting at the right side of the terminal block if you intend to use the terminal block for controlling the shield.
Use the FET polarity safety located at the point of external input, only if you intend to power the wire backward.
Connect the DIN attachment of the 2nd shield with the DOUT of the 1st shield.
Don’t forget to link the ground pin as well as the power 5V. Use a UNO if you want to link more than four shields.
Arduino is capable of supplying to the 5V pin without disruption with only 500 milliamps and as mentioned earlier, each pixel on a WS2815 strip draws a maximum of 60 milliamps.
Thus, if you wish to bypass the DC supply and power your strip using only the Arduino then you can do so for only some pixels and compromise on the brightness and color.
However, it’s always wise to maintain a second power supply just for the pixels.
